Introduction

Layton Simon is a name that many people know from Detroit’s history and the popular TV show BMF (Black Mafia Family). The character Lamar Silas, played by actor Eric Kofi-Abrefa, is based on the real-life story of  Simon. This article shares his journey from crime to becoming a mentor and a positive role model.

Layton Simon’s Early Life

Born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1958, Layton Simon grew up in a tough neighborhood. When he was only eight years old, he protected his mom from two intruders using a shotgun. This moment showed how brave he was, even as a kid. At age 14, he started working in the drug trade, learning from a well-known dealer named Harold Stinson.

In the 1970s, Detroit was a dangerous place, known as the “Murder Capital” because of the high crime rate. Despite the risks, Layton Simon found success and became a leader in the Southwest Detroit drug scene.

Rivalry with the Flenory Brothers

One of the biggest rivalries in Detroit’s history was between Layton-Simon and the Flenory brothers, Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory and Terry “Southwest T” Flenory. Things got worse after Layton-Simon‘s brother was killed, and Big Meech allegedly bragged about it. This made Layton Simon very angry, leading to violent confrontations.

In one incident, Layton Simon shot at Big Meech 18 times, hitting only his cheek. Even though they were rivals, Simon respected Big Meech for sticking to the street code and not involving the police.

Layton Simon’s Legal Troubles

Layton Simon first got in trouble with the law at the age of nine, when he was arrested for stealing hats during the Detroit Riots of 1967. He didn’t go to jail then because he was too young, but this was just the beginning of his legal issues.

Throughout his life, he was arrested many times for his involvement in the drug trade. Eventually, he had to leave his territory because a police officer moved into his apartment block, allowing the Flenory brothers to take over.

Layton Simon in BMF

The BMF series shows a character named Lamar Silas, inspired by Layton-Simon. While the show captures some parts of his life, it changes other details. In real life, Layton-Simon says he never harmed women or kids and was never in a mental institution.

Even with these differences, the character of Lamar Silas highlights the intense rivalries and dangers of the Detroit drug trade.
